Svetlana Edygarova

Dr. Svetlana Edygarova is an Indigenous/Finno-Ugric studies lecturer at the University of Helsinki, Finland. She specialises in the linguistic description of the Permic languages (Udmurt and Komi) and participates in typological research. Another major area of her expertise is the sociolinguistics of minority languages, with a particular focus on linguistic variation, multilingualism and bilingualism, language ideologies of minority languages, Soviet language policy, and Newspeak. Her most recent research examines political and public discourses concerning minority languages in Russia. The transmission of Indigenous languages outside their traditional language communities is another area of her scholarly interest. She is a native speaker of the Finno-Ugric language Udmurt and has been a cultural and language activist for many years. She maintains a blog in Udmurt, Russian, and English, where she shares and popularises her academic and personal knowledge of Indigenous languages. She is also a writer in Udmurt.
