Saara Alakorva comments on Sámi Parliament’s new reporting framework

The first annual report submitted under the revised Sámi Parliament Act represents a key development in the safeguarding of Sámi rights. At a recent event, MultiBEING researcher Dr. Saara Alakorva shared her perspectives on the report and its broader significance.

Under the revised Sámi Parliament Act, the Sámi Parliament is now required to submit an annual report to the Finnish Parliament. Previously, the report was addressed to the Government and did not include statutory proposals for safeguarding Sámi rights.

The Sámi Parliament held a press briefing on the report and its significance on Thursday, 4 June at Sajos in Inari, as well as via a live online broadcast. The event featured the President of the Sámi Parliament, Pirita Näkkäläjärvi, and Vice Presidents Leo Aikio and Tuomas Aslak Juuso.

The significance of the report was commented on by Dr. Saara Alakorva (University of Lapland), a member of the MultiBEING community.

Yle Sápmi covered the event in a news article, available here.
