
Riho Grünthal
Riho Grünthal is Professor of Finnic languages at the University of Helsinki, Finland. His research focuses on western Uralic languages, most notably at the northern Baltic Sea area and in Central Russia. He has conducted fieldwork among the Veps and Erzya Mordvins and, more occasionally, on other Finno-Ugric languages, such as Saamic and Mari between 1990–2014. Most of his research interests are connected with language change involving both the structure and lexicon, as well as the language community. His main areas of linguistic work include sociohistorical change, language sociological state-of-art, typological change, language contacts, historical linguistics, and etymology. He is currently the president of the Finno-Ugrian Society and is involved in several organisations and networks.
