What place do mosquitoes have in a sonic democracy?

Our post-doctoral researcher Nicola Renzi (University if Helsinki) will take part in the international symposium How to live together in sound? Towards sonic democracy, organised by the University of the Arts Helsinki on 12 October 2026.
Renzi will present initial findings from his research on human-mosquito coexistence in the Arctic. His talk, “Listening past Irritation: Mosquitoes and the Limits of a Sonic Democracy?”, asks if coexistence must always be imagined through harmony and explores what mosquito sounds in Sámi and other Arctic Indigenous contexts might reveal about flourishing together through discomfort.

Venue: Helsinki Music Centre, Black Box Concert Hall
Renzi’s sound installation “Čuoikkariššu / Mosquito Shower”, created with Sámi collaborator Mai Britt Utsi, will also be on display at the venue throughout the symposium, from 12 to 14 October 2026.
