Outi Kaarina Laiti to speak at Worlds We Build Together
Our researcher Outi Kaarina Laiti will take part in the event Worlds We Build Together – game design, art and institutions at Aalto University on 27 October. The event brings together experts from game research, museums and the gaming industry to explore games as spaces for collaboration, participation and imagining shared futures.
M-Cult and Aalto University will host Worlds We Build Together – game design, art and Institutions on 27 October 2026 at Marsio, Aalto University’s centre for experiential digital media culture in Espoo. The event is part of M-Cult’s Gaming the Civic programme, which brings together media art, game design, critical thinking and the gaming industry to explore how games can foster civic participation and new forms of collaboration.
The programme features Sámi game researcher and designer Outi Kaarina Laiti (University of Helsinki), Itha O’Neill, Head of Curation at Amos Rex, and Marija Šumarac, Dialogue Designer at Remedy Entertainment. Through keynote presentations and a joint discussion, the speakers will examine how art institutions, creative practitioners and the gaming industry can work together to address contemporary cultural and social challenges.
Outi Kaarina Laiti’s presentation, Sámi Game Design: We Know What We Are Doing, highlights Sámi-led game development and community-based approaches to game design. Drawing on experiences ranging from collaborative game-making initiatives in Utsjoki to exhibitions and game jams, she explores how game development can strengthen Indigenous communities and support Indigenous futures.
At MultiBEING, Laiti’s work contributes to ongoing discussions on Indigenous knowledge, self-determination and more-than-human futures. Her participation in the event brings an important Indigenous perspective to conversations on games, culture and societal transformation.
