Victoria Peemot to present at Coloquio Historia PUCP

Our researcher Victoria Soyan Peemot will deliver a lecture at the Coloquio Historia PUCP in Lima, Peru, on 28 October. Her presentation explores how objects can act as carriers of knowledge, memory, and relationships across generations and species.

Our researcher Victoria Soyan Peemot (University of Helsinki) will give a lecture entitled “Multispecies Stories, Language, and Skills: Objects as Knowledgeable Elders” at the Coloquio Historia PUCP, an international academic event organised by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP) in Lima, Peru on 28 October.

Drawing on Indigenous research methodologies and long-term work with Tozhu and Tukha reindeer-herding communities in Inner Asia, Peemot examines how material objects are not merely artefacts of the past but active sources of knowledge. Her research highlights the ways in which objects can preserve and transmit language, ecological understanding, cultural memory, skills and intergenerational relationships.

The lecture builds on Peemot’s recent work on museum collections and Indigenous knowledge systems, which demonstrates how objects can function as “knowledgeable elders”, helping communities reconnect with cultural heritage, environmental knowledge and histories of multispecies coexistence.

The programme is part of the EDGES project, funded by the European Union, and brings together scholars working on Indigenous knowledge, history, culture and human–environment relations.
