New international project explores verbal art and biocultural heritage through Indigenous knowledge
Professor Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen has received a grant for the project Verbal Art and Biocultural Heritage through the Team Finland Knowledge Programme (TFK) 2026 of the Finnish National Agency for Education.
Professor Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen (University of Helsinki) has been awarded funding through the Team Finland Knowledge (TFK) Programme of the Finnish National Agency for Education for the project Verbal Art and Biocultural Heritage.
The project brings together researchers from the University of Helsinki, the Federal University of Pará (Brazil) and the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Argentina) in an international collaboration focused on Indigenous languages, verbal traditions and ecological knowledge.
By approaching Indigenous languages and verbal art as vital epistemic frameworks, the project investigates innovative ways of understanding human-environment relationships and the role of cultural knowledge in sustaining biocultural heritage.
The collaboration will strengthen academic exchange between Finland and Latin America while advancing interdisciplinary research on Indigenous knowledge systems.
