Buoremus Biigá: Čuoika bargobádji | Mosquito workshop
Welcome to listen and learn with the mosquitoes of Guhkesjávri. This workshop is about the role of mosquitoes in nature, and especially their ecological and cultural value in Sápmi – as the best biigá, čuoikanieida. The workshop will be taught by Mai Britt Utsi, Johan Sara Jr and Nicola Renzi.

Event description
Come and learn about how such a tiny insect is so important and powerful in the world, how many types of mosquitoes exist in Sápmi and how these are changing, how mosquito sounds may affect reindeer movement and support the life cycle of lichen, which plants or methods can be used to protect ourselves from mosquitoes, and how we can joik, make art and co-exist with mosquitoes. The workshop will also be an occasion for all of you to share stories and experiences, including funny ones. It will be a way to welcome the mosquitoes ahead of mihcamárat.
We will start gathering at 14.45 at the beginning of the trail in front of the Gartnetluohkká bus stop on Ávžžiluodda, and then walk towards Guhkesjávri at 15.00. The workshop lasts three hours, but you are welcome to join or leave at any time. Participation is free and open to everyone. The workshop will be primarily in North Sámi, but some English may also be used. At the end of the workshop, there will be snacks and drinks from Sardinia, Italy.
The workshop will be taught by Mai Britt Utsi (Sámi Allaskuvla), Johan Sara Jr (HVL Western Norway University), and a member of the MultiBEING community, Nicola Renzi (University of Helsinki).
The workshop is funded by the Centre of Excellence for MultiBEING Justice in Indigenous Societies at the University of Helsinki, and generously hosted by Guovdageainnu Meahcceguovddáš, to whom we also hope to contribute materials.
