Event information
Three MultiBEING team members from the University of Lapland, Leena Hansen, Anne-Maria Magga and Kamrul Hossain, are attending the NORSIL (Nordic Research Network for Sámi and Indigenous Law) seminar in Tromsø.
Hansen and Magga presented – also on behalf of Martta Alajärvi – a research paper entitled: “Sámi Siida Case v. Finland before the CESCR: Paving the Way for Recognising Traditional Reindeer Herding Governance”.
The presentation explored how both international and national legal frameworks address the Sámi siida system, highlighting the need to better recognise siida-based laws and governance.
It also emphasised how these traditional governance systems should be incorporated into the Reindeer Herding Act and official management structures – an approach aligned with the recommendations of the Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Additionally, our MultiBEING visiting professor Christina Allard from the Luleå University of Technology, gave a presentation on the “accelerating green transition in Sápmi: the importance of landscape planning and Sámi traditional knowledge – focusing on Sweden and Finland”.
Allard, together with Hossain, acted as main organisers of the seminar and provided extensively on the moderation and discussion.
Our research team made an important and timely contribution to the theme of multibeing justice and ongoing discussions on Indigenous rights, legal pluralism, and sustainable governance.
