More-than-human ethics in focus at Nordic Archaeology Conference 2026

PhD researcher Jimena Bigá took part in the Nordic Theoretical Archaeology Group Conference at the Linnaeus University in May.

Our MultiBEING team member, researcher Jimena Bigá (University of Helsinki) presented her recent work in a presentation titled ”More‑than‑human ethics in contested Indigenous landscapes”.

– The main point of my presentation was more‑than‑human ethics – an ethical framework I have learned through my work in the ancestral Tuxá territory, where multiple beings, both biological and spiritual, have taught me. The material for my doctoral project is co‑produced with Tuxá youth, with the territory, and with more‑than‑human beings. This ethical approach is central to my dissertation, Jimena explains.

The conference left Jimena both positively surprised and very happy.

– I had not participated before, as the event had traditionally maintained a rather narrow and conventional focus. However, this year it was held at the Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden, and I was genuinely surprised by the openness and the ongoing shift in archaeology – at least outside Finland. Many researchers were working with multispecies perspectives and were clearly more receptive to multiple ontological dialogues. This was a very positive development.
